UK Status

Resident. A locally common species found in Britain as far north as Cheshire, mainly on areas with limestone or chalk.

Montgomeryshire Status

Rirst recorded in the east of the county in 2011, since then it has been found to be very common locally especially along the railway tracks, which ties in with its limestone association.

Wingspan :   M & F, 12-15mm.

Confusion species

Cochylis dubitana & Cochylis atricapitana.
Flight time & Voltinity (Univoltine)

Habitat

Favours chalk and limestone areas.

Foodplant

Ox-tongue, hawk's beard.

Lifestage data

Eggs laid on seedhead. Larva lives and feeds within the flowers and seedhead. Pupates in a tough silken cocoon spun in debris on the ground.
